Pasture / Grass Management

Pasture

Most pastures where horses graze fall into two categories: land that has been used for horses over an extended period of time; or farming land which is set up to fatten cattle and sheep. Neither of these is entirely suitable for the domestic horse. However, there are a range of grasses and herbs that are suitable for horses and which respond well to the Canterbury climate. We are able to advise on the most suitable combination of grasses and herbs for your horse and pastures.

Organic Fertiliser

We like to recommend the use of organic fertilisers. We are able to assist with soil sampling and then choosing a suitable fertiliser that balances the strengths and weaknesses of your soil and pasture environment. The micro-organism make-up of your soil is also important. Bacteria, fungi and worms play essential roles in the health of your soil and pasture, and ultimately, your horse.

Parasite Management

One of our challenges in managing a horse on pasture is controlling internal parasites. There are three key activities that can support your horse and manage parasite load: (1) manage pastures carefully and remove manure regularly; (2) monitor parasite loads; and (3) support the horse’s immune system and digestive systems with herbals formulas.

We offer monitoring of individual horse parasite loadings and recommend that horse owners have their horses tested at least twice a year (Spring and Autumn). Once a clear base line of parasite loading is identified, we can offer solutions to manage parasite control naturally through pasture management practices and herbal support
